All this month, YouTuber and acne expert Cassandra Bankson is giving you the low-down on what causes acne and what you can do to prevent it.
Acne is so difficult to treat because not all pimples are created equally. Between whiteheads, blackheads, and the ones that form deep down beneath your skin, acne can present itself in many different ways. Below are the five most common types of acne so you can identify and treat the underlying causes of your most annoying blemishes:
Whiteheads: Whiteheads, also known as closed condones, are pretty much unavoidable. But the good news is they're mild and easy to treat. Whiteheads form when dirt, bacteria, and oil enter a pore, creating the perfect conditions for acne bacteria to thrive. To combat the growing infection, the body creates pus which results in blocked and inflamed pores.
Blackheads: Blackheads, which are also called open condones, are almost identical to whiteheads, but without a layer of skin over the top. Because the larger opening is exposed to air, the white matter oxidizes and turns black. That's why when a blackhead is extracted, only the tip is black and the remainder is white.

Pustules: Pustules begin as whiteheads that get irritated or inflamed to the point that cell walls break, infecting surrounding pores and becoming a bigger pimple. They are more inflamed than whiteheads and filled with a yellow pus as opposed to white.
Cysts: Cysts, which are usually triggered by hormones, are generally more painful than other types of acne. They're typically buried underneath layers of skin and filled with a clear or cream-colored liquid pus. Attempting to pop them can rupture cell walls, infecting other surrounding cells. Sometimes, even without pressure, they can move naturally and invade nearby pores. Because of their location and hormonal relation, they're usually the toughest to treat.
Nodules: Nodules are similar to cysts, though less common and usually harder and more marble-like. Nodules can be calcified or form from old cysts that have hardened. They may even form on top of cysts on a shallower layer of skin. While cysts can affect someone without nodules, nodular acne is almost always accompanied by cysts. And, just like cystic acne, it can be very painful.
